Shelter ribbon‑cutting set, volunteers still needed
With the renovations and changes to the old Maple Manor nursing home (505 W. 8th St.), well on the way to being finished, a ribboncutting ceremony has been scheduled for Oct. 11, according to St. Croix County Salvation Army Director Duana Bremer.
“There isn’t really much painting or anything like that left for volunteers to do, but we still need a ton of help for our final push,” Bremer said. “We need people to help us move everything from the old location to the new one, but we will be doing it in stages so that stuff doesn’t pile up on us while we continue to work on the rooms and other spaces.”
Along with moving linens and other items from the old Grace Place in Somerset to the new one in New Richmond, Bremer also said the Salvation Army could use more help cleaning the bedrooms and getting them ready for the people who will be using them come fall.
“For right now we are pretty much set for volunteers, but once everything is set and moved, and we get closer to the opening, we will need help organizing every thing and getting everything in its right place,” Bremer said.
Bremer is glad the ribbon- cutting event is just a few months away, not only because everything will be finished, but also because the current Grace Place is filled to capacity.
“Grace Place is filled to the max right now,” Bremer said. “It is so full that even if someone came to us and needed a place to stay we would have to turn them away. The new space will give us a lot more room to house people, which will be really nice. We want to be able to help as many people and families as we can.”
According to Bremer, the Salvation Army hopes to have a few other events organized and scheduled leading up to the ribboncutting, but the plans have yet to be finalized and approved.
