Surveyors get green light to start North Hudson stoplight work

A surveying crew on Monday was braving the traffic turning onto Monroe Street from Sixth Street North, laying the groundwork for the much-ballyhooed stoplight at that North Hudson intersection.

The surveyor from Cedar Corp. of Menomonie had a transit set up in the middle of Monroe Street, right off the east edge of Sixth. He was viewing west to another transit set up next to the old car shop entrance off of Fourth Street.

This is the first step in a project to install a stoplight and also upgrade the sewer interception line that runs along the west end of Monroe.

The construction is slated to start in spring or summer of 2001 and finish that fall, said Len Meissen, village of North Hudson president.

Scout camp named after Hudsonite Ron Phillippo

Cannon River Scout Reservation, located three miles west of Cannon Falls, Minn., is no more. The 450 rolling acres are still there, along with winterized cabins, a conference center, wooded campsites, swimming pool, climbing tower, cross-country ski trails, canoes and a dining hall. What is gone, is the name. With the unveiling of its new sign on Saturday, July 15, the camp officially began to operate as Phillippo Scout Reservation.

The name change is a tribute to former Indianhead Council Scout Executive/CEO and Hudson resident Ron Phillippo, who retired at the end of February after 42 years with the Boy Scouts of America, 22 of them in service to local youth. "Few individuals are more devoted to the cause of youth development or more optimistic about the future of our children," said former Volunteer Council President Kay Fredericks in remarks at the camp's rededication.

By using the Phillippo surname, the Indianhead Council also recognizes the support of Betty Phillippo, Ron's wife of 42 years, and their daughters Kris and Kate.

Phillippo Scout Reservation is acclaimed nationally as a premier Cub Scout camp, with weekend resident camping and summer and winter day camp activities available. For two generations, thousands of scouts from the Indianhead Council's twelve-county service area (Anoka, Chisago, Dakota, LeSueur, Ramsey, Rice, Scott and Washington counties in Minnesota and Burnett, Pierce, Polk and St. Croix counties in Wisconsin) and beyond have traveled to the camp on the south shore of the Byllesby Reservoir to learn about teamwork, self-reliance, camping and the outdoors. "During any given summer or winter session, this camp is usually filled to capacity," remarked Chairman of the Board Steve Weekes.

Indianhead Scouting/BSA serves young people with a variety of programs, including Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for boys in grades 1-12, and the co-ed programs of Learning for Life (K-12) and Venturing and Exploring (ages 14-20).
