Hudson's Valley Cartage buys Northway to double in size By Jon Echternacht If it's boxed, skidded or crated and needs to be delivered overnight Valley Cartage will haul it. And the longtime Hudson trucking business is about to more than double in size. CEO Jerry Gilbert, 57, announced Monday that Valley Cartage will acquire Northway Carriers, Inc. of Superior. The deal is effective April 1. Currently, the Hudson business has 35 employees, 34 tractors and 70 trailers. "The addition of Northway will add 130 employees, 70 trailers and 100 tractors," Jerry said. "We expect to add more employees in Hudson." The latest acquisition continues a growth trend for Valley Cartage that was founded in 1935 by Jerry's father, Norman R. Gilbert. "Norman launched Gilbert Truck Line by hauling a team of horses from Hudson to Trempealeau for $1.50," Jerry said. The company is currently located in the St. Croix Business Park not far from the original Gilbert family farm. For more information about the transaction, see the March 24 issue of the Star-Observer.
