Hudson - Neighbors object to expansion of planned Heritage Greens commercial district

The Hudson Plan Commission listened Thursday night for nearly two hours to residents of Heritage Greens and Red Cedar Canyon voice objections to the proposed expansion of a commercial district in their neighborhood.

BrightKeys Building & Development Corp., developer of the Heritage Greens subdivision, is proposing to expand a planned 4.4-acre commercial area to 10.25 acres.

A small grocery store, gas station, car wash, bank and retail shops have been identified as some of the businesses that might locate in the commercial district.

BrightKeys also is asking for a change in the conditional use permit for the planned residential development to allow construction of an 88-unit "senior/special needs" building and 140 "multiple-family/senior" housing units.

Residents said BrightKeys wants to change the plan for the neighborhood because the bottom has dropped out of the housing market. They said it wouldn't be fair to homeowners who were promised a quiet residential neighborhood to now have a commercial district next door.

"This is a corporate bail-out. That is what they are asking for," one homeowner said. "And again, just like with Bear Stearns, they want the taxpayers to bail them out."

The Plan Commission didn't take any action on BrightKeys' request for an amendment to the Heritage Greens conditional use permit.
