Law enforcement turning up the heat on I-94 Law enforcement agencies from Hudson to Eau Claire say they will be turning up the heat on speeders along Interstate 94 this summer. Officials announced the Summer Heat traffic enforcement program at a press conference Thursday in Hudson. The enforcement program will run from May 1 - Sept. 30 and will involve the sheriff's departments from Eau Claire, Dunn and St. Croix counties along with the Hudson Police Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol. Officials say that the program is aimed at combating speeding, aggressive driving and other dangerous actions that can cause deadly crashes. "With saturation patrols for high-visibility enforcement on I-94, we are striving to get drivers to comply voluntarily with traffic laws to reduce crashes that cause deaths and serious injuries," said Dennis Hughes, chief of safety programs for the State Patrol Bureau of Transportation Safety. He added that if voluntary compliance fails, officers on I-94 will be ready to hand out tickets. Hughes said that officers will be out in greater numbers along the interstate and in greater numbers during the Summer Heat program. During the press conference officials noted that speed-related crashes in Wisconsin kill or injure someone every 51 minutes. They said that speeding is not only deadly, but is very common. In 2007, there were nearly one-quarter million speeding convictions in Wisconsin including more than 145,000 for 11 to 19 mph over the posted limit, according to Wisconsin Department of Transportation statistics. To help pay for the overtime and other enforcement expenses the State Patrol will provide a total of $88,000 in federal funding for the mobilization program. Published 09:39 May-02-08 | TOP |
