• Hudson - County deputy arrested for OWI

A St. Croix County deputy was arrested for drunken driving while on his way to attend a management training session in Appleton last weekend.

Sheriff Dennis Hillstead said Patrol Captain Mike Winberg, 36, was arrested for OWI in Grand Chute in the northeastern part of the state about 10:30 p.m. Sunday (May 4). He was driving a county owned car.

"Mike is on paid administrative leave pending a review of the incident," Hillstead said Thursday.

"He was held in the Outagamie County Jail for about 10 hours. A chief deputy and a lieutenant went over Monday and picked up Mike and the car," Hillstead said.

The sheriff said he was notified about the incident about 1 a.m. Monday by a phone call from Little Chute authorities.

Winberg was promoted to patrol captain last July. The town of Forest native started with the sheriff's department as a full-time employee in 1993. His participation in the week-long training program was subsequently cancelled.
