Hudson -- Woman sentenced in drunk driving death

A young woman who was convicted of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle was sentenced to prison last Thursday.

Casey L. Wolf, 22, 1465 N. Fourth St., New Richmond, received a 12-year sentence July 10 including three years in prison and nine years' extended supervision.

Wolf was convicted March 11 of one felony count of vehicular homicide, and two additional felony counts related to the incident were read into the record and dismissed.

She was charged following the Jan. 13, 2007, investigation of a two-car crash in which Sheldon D. Weiss was trapped inside a burning car and died of injuries suffered in the mishap.

The sheriff's accident report said Wolf was driving a 1994 Ford Mustang south and Weiss was driving a 2004 Chevrolet north on County A when the two vehicles collided head on. The accident occurred about 4:30 a.m. just north of County U in the town of Hudson.

Their landlord found their remains on May 27 in their apartment in Burkhardt, just northeast of Hudson. Gregory Knoll was 44, and his brother was 41.

Hillstead is not sure if a crime had taken place. He said case is complicated and he waiting for toxicology reports that detail everything in the victims' blood.

The sheriff said both were known as partiers and they previously sought treatment for addictions to alcohol and other drugs.

Obama campaign opens Hudson office

By Randy Hanson, RiverTown Staff

Shortly after Republican presidential nominee John McCain spoke to 800 women in Hudson Friday morning, supporters of Democratic nominee Barack Obama opened a campaign office in downtown Hudson.

"We're very happy to be opening this office in Hudson," said Phillip Walzak, Wisconsin communications director for the Obama campaign. "We will be organizing and mobilizing volunteers and voters in this city and this region for the next four month - 'til Election Day."

The program opening the office - a large room behind The Purple Tree store at 520 Second St. - was held by women in response to McCain's meeting with women.

They had harsh words for the Republican candidate's economic plan, characterizing it as nothing more than an extension of failed Bush economic policies that have harmed working women.

"Over 483,000 jobs have been lost in this country over the last several months. This is a failed economic plan in our country. We need a real economic plan," said Minnesota House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher, who gave the main address.

Anderson Kelliher called attention to a report on the impact of the Obama economic plan for working women that was release the previous day, and said Obama's plan is the best one.
