• Hudson insurance agent sentenced to jail

A Hudson insurance agent has been sentenced to jail for failing to secure policies for customers who wrote premium checks for coverage.

Billie Jo Casa de Calvo, 39, 1616 Stonepine Bay, Hudson, was sentenced to 90 days in jail, two years' probation, fined $98 and ordered to pay $36,554.48 restitution Aug. 13 on a misdemeanor theft conviction.

Judge Eric J. Lundell also ordered Casa de Calvo to surrender her Wisconsin insurance license and allowed the 90-day jail sentence to be served in intervals throughout the first year of probation.

The criminal complaint said that between April 5 and Nov. 8, 2007, Casa de Calvo cashed checks from customers for coverage with Greater Insurance Services, but the checks weren't delivered to the company and policies weren't issued.

According to the Hudson police report, Greater Insurance Services' corporate office in Madison received numerous phone calls from clients with concerns about their policies or lack of coverage. On Oct. 29, 2007, a company review determined policy premium checks were being deposited into Casa de Calvo's personal account.

In the meantime, Casa de Calvo took three weeks off from her Hudson insurance office and enrolled in a flight attendant school for Northwest Airlines, the complaint said.
