Man will be sentenced Friday for Hudson armed robbery

HUDSON -- A Wisconsin man will be sentenced Friday for robbing an armored bank vehicle in Hudson, a day after he shot and wounded a woman in Minnesota and stole another person's mini-van before burning that vehicle.

Zachary Weigand, 32, of Dresser struck a plea deal Monday in the latter half of that crime spree.

He pleaded guilty in St. Croix County to armed robbery and arson, and three other charges were dropped.

Weigand settled his Minnesota case earlier this year, and was sentenced to almost 13 years in prison there.

Authorities said he tried to steal a woman's car in Lake Elmo, Minn., in 2003, and shot her four times.

He then stole a mini-van from a woman who tried to help the shooting victim.

The next day, Weigand drove to the Citizens State Bank in Hudson, where he robbed a truck outside and got away with $238,000.

He later burned the mini van.

Weigand was not arrested until five years later, when a handgun found in Minneapolis was traced back to the shooting at Lake Elmo. That victim has since recovered.

Meanwhile, Weigand's wife Debra, 29, has pleaded innocent to helping her husband with the robbery, depositing some of the cash, and taking her husband home from the van fire.

A judge will review the status of her case next Tuesday.
