Hudson -- Debra Wiegand convicted in armored car robbery

The wife of a man sentenced to prison in an armored car robbery in Hudson six years ago has been convicted in connection with the crime. Debra Ann Wiegand pleaded no contest to one count of armed robbery Monday morning in a plea agreement. Charges of armed robbery, arson and driving a vehicle without consent were dismissed.

Judge Eric J. Lundell ordered a pre-sentence investigation. A review of the case was set for Feb. 19.

Her husband, Zachary Ryan Wiegand, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his part in the robbery of an American Security armored car May 29, 2003, in the parking lot of Citizens State Bank in Hudson.

The criminal complaint said Wiegand set fire to a mini-van he used in the robbery in St. Patrick's Cemetery before heading into Minnesota in a stolen car. He was convicted and sentenced to 13 years in prison in Minnesota for a shooting and car-jacking incident in Lake Elmo following the robbery.

Wiegand, a 1995 Hudson High School graduate, was arrested Oct. 7, 2008, in a Wal-Mart parking lot in St. Croix Falls after a gun found during a traffic stop in Minneapolis was linked to him. Debra Wiegand was charged in connection with the Hudson robbery March 5.

Hudson -- Salvation Army still needs donations

Despite the recent success of Helen McCombie's 30 hour marathon to raise $30,000 for the Salvation Army in St. Croix County, the campaign is coming up short of its $100,000 goal.

Coordination Duana Bremer said they have received about $74,000 in donations this season as compared to the $94,000 that had been donated by Christmas last year. She is hoping that that difference can be made up in the days to come.

Bremer said that 85 percent of the money collected in St. Croix County stays here to support projects like Grace Place, a homeless shelter for families in Somerset, and to provide food and emergency assistance for those in need throughout the county. If they cannot raise at least as much as last year, those efforts will be in jeopardy.

Expect to see bell-ringers at the Red Kettles through the end of the year and anyone wishing to help can contact the Salvation Army at (715)247-2944. Donations can be sent to Salvation Army, c/o Grace Place, 203 Church Hill Road, Somerset, WI 54025.

Subject of North Hudson manhunt surrenders to police

A man accused of making terroristic threats against his girlfriend and law enforcement officers surrendered to police at 2:07 p.m. Tuesday in North Hudson.

The surrender outside of a home at 658 Galahad Road N. ended a three-hour stand-off that started when authorities found the man's vehicle at the residence.

North Hudson Police Chief Mark Richert said Washington County, Minn., authorities asked his department to go to the house early Tuesday morning because they believed the man was there.

Washington County wanted him because he had allegedly threatened to kill his girlfriend and any law enforcement officers who tried to apprehend him, as well as himself.

Richert said the suspect had a Minnesota permit to carry a concealed handgun.

Richert said the man wasn't at the Galahad Road residence when police went there at about 7:30 a.m.

But police found the man's vehicle at the residence when they returned at about 11 a.m.

The North Hudson Police Department, assisted by the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department and other law enforcement personnel, cordoned off the neighborhood.

A roadblock was set up on Galahad at Brown's Beach on the south side of the perimeter. To the north, vehicles headed toward Galahad on Sommers Street N. were redirected onto Fourth Street N.

Meanwhile, a police negotiator was able to make contact with the man through his mother, and eventually talked him into surrendering.

Richert said the man came out of his mother's house with his hands in the air, walked to Galahad Road, and was taken into custody.

He was being held in the St. Croix County Jail awaiting extradition to Minnesota.

The St. Croix County Sheriff's Department SWAT team assisted in apprehending the suspect, along with sheriff's deputies, North Hudson officers and a DNR warden.
