Minneapolis woman injured in hunting accident near Somerset

Shooting accident

A Minneapolis woman was shot by her husband in a hunting accident west of Somerset Thursday evening.

Po Chona Lor, 38, and his wife, Ber Lee, 33, both of Minneapolis, were deer hunting at the Fish and Wildlife Service land just west of Somerset. At about 4:20 p.m., Lor's rifle was slung under his right shoulder when the gun discharged, striking Lee above her left knee.

Lor then carried his wife more than 100 yards to the parking area, and drove to Somerset Tom Thumb to call 911. Somerset Fire and Rescue, Somerset Police Department, Department of Natural Resources and St. Croix County Sheriff's Department responded. Somerset Fire and Rescue transported Lee to the fire department where she was airlifted by LifeLink helicopter to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. As of Friday morning, she was still in intensive care.

Sheriff Dennis Hillstead and DNR Conservation Warden Rick Rosen said their departments are jointly investigating the incident, and both said the shooting was clearly an accident.

Although Lor was hunting on public lands during Zone T, he will be cited for carrying a rifle in a shotgun-only zone, Rosen said.
