• Resident input requested for Somerset Main Street renovation project

Downtown Somerset is in for a big change as the completion of the Highway 35/64 project draws near.

The Somerset Village Board is preparing for Main Street to be returned to the village from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WISDOT).

And village officials want to hear residents' thoughts on it.

At 6 p.m. on March 29, an informational open house will be held at the Somerset Village Hall for residents to learn about plans for Main Street reconstruction. A presentation of the project proposal will be held at 6:30 p.m.

"The village is looking at opinions to fix up the town," described Wendy Sander of Cedar Corporation, who is involved with the project.

With Highway 35/64 soon bypassing Somerset, it is customary that the former portion of the highway, which is Main Street, be delivered back under village care. Along with that transfer comes funding from the Department of Transportation to aid the project.

The informational meeting kicks off the preliminary process of rejuvenating downtown. Offering an overview of the project, the March 29 meeting is the first of many opportunities that the community will have to ask questions on the reconstruction.

"There will be meetings along the process," Sander mentioned .

Currently, options for the project include sidewalk treatments, decorative street lighting, adding turn lanes and more. Those with property connections to Main Street will be involved too.

"We'll be working with businesses and residents along the route to keep them informed," she said.
