HEADLINES:
Health officials warn of Lyme disease The northwestern and west central portions of Wisconsin, including St. Croix County, have the highest incidence of Lyme disease statewide, according to the St. Croix County Department of Public Health. The disease is transmitted by the deer tick, which must be attached to a person's skin for 24 hours. People (and their pets) who spend time outdoors in woody, tick-infested environments are at an increased risk of exposure. Residents can protect themselves by covering their skin when outside, checking themselves and their pets for ticks and using repellents containing 0.5 percent permethrin or 20-30 percent DEET. For more information, contact the St. Croix County Department of Public Health at 715-246-8263. Published 12:39 May-14-08 | TOP |
