New Richmond soccer outscores first opponents 14-0 The New Richmond boys soccer team is winning the battle at both ends of the field in their first games of the season. Through three games, the Tigers have outscored their opponents 14-0. That includes a 2-0 win on Thursday over long-time nemesis Amery. Thursday's game was scoreless well into the second half. The Tigers scored 20 minutes into the second half on a goal by Josh Hubmer. Amery then put on heavy pressure, but the Tigers kept Amery off the scoreboard. New Richmond's Jordan Anderson then scored with five minutes in the game to raise the lead to 2-0. The next game for the Tigers comes on Tuesday, when they play at Baldwin-Woodville. Grace Place out of emergency funds "We've had to turn some families away." According to Duana Bremer, director of Grace Place in Somerset, the facility is out of money for the year. The facility normally helps St. Croix County families in need with rent, utilities and transportation. Last year their $100,000 budget lasted until the end of the fiscal year (Oct. 1). This year, however, they have spent more than that. "It's actually closer to $120,000," Bremer said. "We're seeing a greater need in the community." Bremer said they were able to cover the additional $20,000 due to an Emergency Shelter grant from the Department of Commerce, the United Way and, of course, their bellringing campaign during the holidays. Although Bremer did not have the numbers at the time, she said the number of families coming in for help has increased, not necessarily the amount per family. By the end of July, those additional funds had also run out. "It's never been this bad," Bremer said, drawing on her five-years experience at Grace Place. "It's a sad day when people come to The Salvation Army and we have to say we're out of funds." To find out ways you can help, contact Grace Place at 715-247-2944. Published 10:34 Sep-05-08 | TOP |
