• Child dies from injuries received after getting hit by pickup

A 7-year-old child who was hit by a pickup truck in Balsam Lake at around 4 p.m. Friday has died from his injuries, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities say that Cody Ward died at around 4:30 p.m. at Gillette Children's Hospital in St. Paul.

Witnesses say Cody ran out into traffic while trying to cross West Main Street (Highway 46) when he was hit by the pickup truck driven by Cody Turnquist, 18, of rural Centuria.

Polk County authorities said that at the time of the accident traffic was moderate.

Sheriff's Department officials reported that Cody is the son of Harlene Fitzpatrick of rural St. Croix Falls.

Emergency responders from the Balsam Lake Police Department and Unity Area Ambulance treated Ward at the scene and the child was then airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

He was later transferred to the Gillette Children's Hospital in St. Paul.
