HEADLINES:
New Richmond man identified as accident victim A 55-year-old rural New Richmond man, Larry W. Scheel, has been identified as the victim in a two-vehicle crash that occurred at 10:50 a.m., Wednesday at a town of Emerald intersection. Scheel was the driver of a 2000 Ford F250 pickup that failed to stop at a northbound stop sign on 220th Street and was struck by a westbound pickup, sending the Scheel truck into a ditch and onto its top. The second truck, a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, came to rest in a nearby farm field. Scheel was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy St. Croix County Medical Examiner. A passenger with Scheel, John M. Bazille, 54, of Emerald, was transported directly from the scene to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with injuries described as "serious" in a St. Croix County Sheriff's Department press release. His condition wasn't immediately available Tuesday morning. The driver of the striking vehicle, Roger W. Fischer, 48, of Emerald, was transported by Baldwin EMS to Baldwin hospital with "non life-threatening" injuries, the release said. None of the occupants of either vehicle were wearing seat belts, according to the sheriff's department. The crash is still under investigation. Scheel, who resided at 2286 CTH S, operated Scheel Angus Inc. He recently donated an Angus heifer on behalf of the Minnesota Angus Association for a program aimed at helping youth get started raising beef cattle. Deputies were assisted at the scene by United Fire personnel from both Baldwin and Woodville stations and the Wisconsin State Patrol. Scheel's death is the 12th on St. Croix County roads this year.
