Two announce candidacy for Pierce County Treasurer

Judy Wiff, RiverTown Regional Editor

Two women have announced their candidacies for Pierce County treasurer.

Both Tami R. Langer, N5640 670th St., Ellsworth, and Fay C. Owen, 1901 140th Ave., Maiden Rock, are running as Republicans. Lee Skog, treasurer for the last 12 years, said he will not seek re-election. Skog turns 68 this summer and is retiring.

Langer, a lifelong resident of Pierce County, has a background in banking and finance.

A graduate of Ellsworth High School, she began working for M&I Bank right after graduation. She has worked at M&I for 25 years and is now assistant vice president/bank manager of the Ellsworth branch.

Owen has been document clerk in the register of deeds office for the last five years. Prior to that she worked temporary jobs in three county departments: in the treasurer's office during tax time; as a long-term replacement in the county clerk's office; and on a special project in the Land Management Department.

Owen also served as clerk/treasurer for the town of Maiden Rock for 10 years. She holds a bachelor's degree in English and speech from Bethel College in St. Paul and did post-graduate work at the University of Minnesota. She is a graduate of St. Paul Park High School.

The filing period for the treasurer's position and four other county offices is 5 p.m. July 11. Candidates must collect 200 to 400 signatures on their nomination papers.

Previously, D.A.R.E. officer Nancy Ortwerth announced she is challenging incumbent Sheriff Everett Muhlhausen, who also announced his bid for re-election.

Only the incumbents have as yet announced their candidacy for these offices: county clerk (Jamie Feuerhelm); clerk of court (Peggy Feuerhelm); and register of deeds (Vicki Nelson).

The general election is Nov. 7.
