Fire damages Ellsworth apartment; child playing with lighter By Bill Kirk, Pierce County Herald Fire damaged an apartment unit at the Trillium Green residential complex on Ellsworth's northwest side Saturday night. The Ellsworth Fire Department responded to a report from Andrew Vorwald at 583 N. Maple St., Apt. E, at 10:27 p.m. The occupants got out safely and no one was injured. Smoke was visible from the upstairs of the unit on the southwest corner of Maple Street and Industrial Road. There was extensive damage to the interior of the northeast unit and water damage to an adjacent unit. Fire fighters entered the garage below and used the department's aerial ladder truck for an overhead approach to the blaze. Some furnishings and other items were removed through an upstairs window. The cause of the fire appears to be a child playing with a lighter, according to Police Chief Greg Place. Place said Monday the matter, which involves negligent handling of burning materials, will be referred to the county's human services department. No cost estimate for the damage was available early this week from a spokesperson for WestCAP in Glenwood City, operator of the complex. A contractor is expected to be hired to repair the damage in the apartment building, which was built in 2003. The occupants were staying at a separate residence after the incident. Fire crews were on the scene until 11:58 p.m. Saturday. Published 15:23 Apr-16-07 | TOP |
