Trapping warning posted near Trimbelle Creek

By Bill Kirk, RiverTown Staff

TOWN OF TRIMBELLE-People who explore the land along Trimbelle Creek may encounter a sign warning about trapping being done in the vicinity.

According to the sign, the trapping hasn't been initiated by locals, but by a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). And although the sign is near the creek, it's sufficiently off the closest road (commonly known as "Lovers Lane") that the public might also miss the advisory.

So concerns have been raised about the activity, as the posting especially cautions children and pets be kept away. Depending on someone's point of entry, they could come across the non-apparent traps before they ever see the sign, those concerned say.

The sign reads: "Warning-Animal Capture Devices. Keep Children and Pets Away.

"Pet owners are advised to keep their pets under physical restraint. Mechanical devices (traps, snares or other restraining devices) have been placed in this area to capture animals causing damage or harm. These devices and the animals captured in them are the property of the United States government. Tampering with these devices, animals captured in them, and this sign is a federal crime.

"U.S. Department of Agriculture. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Wildlife Services."

Onalaska cop makes second run for 91st Assembly District

Chris Danou is making his second run at capturing the 91st Assembly seat.

Danou ran in 2006, but was defeated in the Democratic primary by long-time incumbent Rep. Barb Gronemus, Whitehall.

Gronemus is retiring at the end of this term.

Danou is an Onalaska police officer who lives in Trempealeau with his wife Kate and two sons.

"I am running for the same reason that I am a Police Officer, I believe deeply in service to my community," said Danou.

Danou says that he will focus on health care, property taxes and school financing.

He also says he will focus on the environment.

"I recognize the immense challenge posed to our generation by global warming and will work to make Wisconsin a world leader in building the technologies and sustainable lifestyles that will help us through this crisis and that have the potential to bring new 'green-collar' jobs to the area," Danou said.

Danou is originally from Marshfield and has a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Masters of Arts in international affairs from American University and a Masters of Science in wildlife biology from UW-Stevens Point.

He is the current president of the Onalaska Professional Police Association and has been the chairman of the Trempealeau County Democratic Party.

The 91st Assembly District covers parts of eastern Pierce County, parts of Pepin County along with all of Buffalo and Trempealeau counties.
