Prescribed burns improve wildlife habitat

Some of the fires you see this spring will be prescribed burns by the state Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Those controlled fires will take place on both public and private lands in St. Croix, Pierce and Polk counties. They'll range in size from 10 to 100 acres and are scheduled on a four- to five-year rotation.

The burns create pockets of open water for waterfowl, improve habitat for nesting birds and songbirds, and preserve grassland and native flowers.

For information about prescribed burns or an individual burn site, contact (715) 684-2914 or (715) 246-7784.
