Man found dead in submerged SUV

HAGER CITY -- A man was found dead Monday afternoon in a sport utility vehicle submerged in Mud Lake along the east side of Highway 63 on the Wisconsin side of the Eisenhower Bridge within sight of Red Wing.

The Lake City, Minn., man has been identified but his name is being withheld until authorities are certain all family members have been notified.

A Pierce County sheriff's deputy said officials believe the man was traveling east on Highway 63 either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning when he veered off the road.

The SUV traveled about 150 yards through the ditch before entering the water.

Tire tracks could be seen leading from the highway to the spot where a crew from Siewert's Towing pulled the vehicle from the water.

Deputies were called to the scene at 12:19 p.m. Monday. The vehicle was apparently discovered by a passserby or someone who stopped to fish from the roadside. Deputy Jeremy Brookshaw, who issued a press release, said simply that the department was notified of a vehicle submerged in the lake.

No foul play is suspected, deputies said. The incident, which authorities are calling an accident, is still under investigation.
