Mobile home accident kills Ellsworth man

ELLSWORTH - A 29-year-old Ellsworth man died Friday afternoon after he was crushed beneath a trailer house he was preparing to move.

Nicholas A. Bayer was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 4 p.m., at N2696 Highway A, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

Bayer was removing blocks from beneath the trailer when the mishap occurred.

Ellsworth fire and ambulance personnel responded and initially asked for heavy equipment from the town of Salem and a neighboring farmer, but those requests were cancelled when it was learned Bayer had been freed from others already at the scene.

A medical helicopter was summoned but no transport was made.

Bayer's name is familiar to many as a member of the Ellsworth Hubbers baseball team and the annual demolition derby at the Pierce County Fair.

More details will be posted when they become available.
