HEADLINES:
Pierce County clean sweep coming up By Phil Pfuehler, RiverTown Staff Pierce County residents can get rid of their hazardous materials from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 19, at the county's Materials Recovery Facility on Hwy. 65 just north of Ellsworth. This free disposal day is held annually and called Spring Clean Sweep. For the first time, unwanted medications will be added to the list of discarded items. That list includes: Pesticides, fertilizers, solvents, fuels, cleaning agents; also lead, oil, aerosol and latex-based and aerosol paints; plus other chemicals from farms, homes and businesses. "We have been encouraging farmers, residents and business people to look through their barns, sheds, garages, basements, storage cabinets, and under the kitchen and bathroom sinks for any and all unwanted chemicals and paints," said Steve Melstrom, Pierce County Solid Waste coordinator. "Now we're asking them to look in their medicine cabinets, too, for all unwanted medications." Discarded materials should be kept in their original containers so they can be properly identified and disposed of. For more information, call the Pierce County Solid Waste office at 273-3092.
