• Committee chooses favorite for county treasurer job

A committee has a nominee for St. Croix County treasurer but isn't announcing the choice until background checks are complete.

Human Resources Administrator Tammy Funk said Thursday that the person's references checked out well, but criminal and credit checks aren't finished.

A recommendation is expected to go to the County Board at its June 16 meeting.

The three finalists for the job were Kim Ard, New Richmond; Denise Shirley Carter, Hudson; and Laurie Noble, Hudson.

At total of 53 people applied for the position, which was left vacant when Cheryl Slind resigned to take a private sector job.

Eleven applicants were called in for first interviews, and three were called back for second interviews.

Slind, who had been treasurer for six years, began a new term Jan. 1. The person appointed to replace her will hold the job until Dec. 31, 2012, but will have to be elected by citizens to serve longer than that.

Current pay for the treasurer's job is $61,000. The treasurer also receives the same retirement contributions and health, disability and life insurance coverage provided to other county employees.
