Man left bulk of estate to son accused of killing him; more state briefs A man shot to death near Lake Delton last week left seven children behind, but almost his entire estate was left to the son who's charged with his murder. Sauk County probate records show that Angelo Crisafulli, 55, left $1,400 for his minor daughter and a motorcycle for his brother. But everything else went to Michael Crisafulli, 13, who was charged as an adult with shooting his father in the back of the head at their home the evening of Jan. 19. If he's convicted, state law will not allow the youngster to receive the inheritance. Probate records do not list an exact value of the estate, but it's valued at over $50,000. ---------- DA says layoff will mean fewer crimes prosecuted The Sheboygan County district attorney says he'll no longer prosecute certain misdemeanors if the state lays off one of his six fulltime assistants. Joe DeCecco has given the most dramatic response yet to the state's recent announcement that it will lay off an unspecified number of assistant DA's throughout Wisconsin. The Doyle administration has not said how many layoffs there will be, or when. But it says they must occur because the assistant DA's contract specifies they only can take five unpaid furlough days a year, fewer than the eight per year the governor ordered for all state workers to help cover a huge shortfall in state revenues. Unlike other courthouse employees, district attorneys and their staffs are paid and regulated by the state instead of each county. Catherine White, head of the Assistant District Attorneys Association, said DA's need to know specific layoff information so they can make plans. The state's Jennifer Donnelly said her office will announce its plan in a couple weeks. She said the overall budget for DA's would be $1.3 million in the red this year if nothing happens. But DeCecco said Wisconsin needs more prosecutors to address the crime that's occurring. DeCecco calls his decision not to prosecute certain misdemeanors a dire consequence, and said about 1,200 people a year would go scot-free. He said any misdemeanor that involves domestic violence would still be prosecuted. Otherwise, things like theft and marijuana possession would be overlooked. ---------- Milwaukee records first homicides of 2010 Milwaukee went almost three weeks without a homicide in the New Year, but that changed last weekend when three murders were recorded. Two people shot outside a southside Milwaukee tavern early Saturday have been identified as Benjamin Nunez, 20, and Salvador Chavarin, 47. Police were still looking for suspects at last word. Meanwhile, Demetric Scott, 36, has been charged with Milwaukee's first homicide of 2010. Prosecutors said he beat and kicked Steve Allen last Wednesday night in a dispute over property. Allen died at a hospital two days later. His age was not immediately released. Scott is jail under a $100,000 bond on a charge of felony murder. ---------- Family brings rescued baby home A baby who was rescued from the Haitian earthquake is home with her adoptive family in northeast Wisconsin. Patrick and Jaime Richard of Suamico were planning for two years to adopt a child from the poverty-stricken island. They ended up with a girl named Shae, who was stranded in the ruins of this month's earthquake. Jaime's friend, Nikki Gomes, asked her father to help locate the baby. Jack Krueger serves on the Brown County Board, and he contacted Congressman Steve Kagen. Shae was among dozens of babies brought to Florida after being rescued. The Richards spent two days there getting the final paperwork done last week. They flew into Green Bay Monday, where Gomes and Krueger welcomed the couple and their newest family member home. Shae will be the first girl in a family with two boys ages one and three. Published 09:15 Jan-26-10 | TOP |
Somerset man dies when tire hits car A Somerset man was killed in a Saturday afternoon accident near Stillwater, Minn. Shane Erickson, 23, was killed when a wheel from a Ford F-350 vehicle bounced across Hwy. 95, striking Erickson's Pontiac Grand Am. According to the Minnesota State Patrol report, the crash occurred at about 2:23 p.m. in the southbound lanes of 95 at the intersection with Hwy. 36. Bradley Wicklem, 39, of New Richmond, was the driver of the pickup. He was reportedly uninjured, as was a passenger. Troopers said Erickson was wearing a seatbelt, and his airbag was activated when the car was hit. Published 10:26 Jan-26-10 | TOP |
