OEM Fabricators expanding in Baldwin's former Clopay space

OEM Fabricators, Inc., a contract manufacturer that was founded with three employees in 1986, announced Thursday that it had signed a long-term lease for 80,000 square feet of production space in the former Clopay building at Baldwin.

OEM Micro, a division of OEM Fabricators that specializes in micro scale instruments, medical, electronics and aerospace markets, will occupy the leased space. Approximately 40,000 square feet of the space will be devoted to OEM Fabricators for current and future projects.

OEM will move 40 associates from Woodville to Baldwin and plans to hire an additional 100 associates over the next few years.

S. Mark Tyler, president of OEM Fabricators, Inc., made the announcement and credited employees' hard work for making the expansion possible.

"With the expansion to the Baldwin facility, I would like to congratulate our team members on their significant contributions to the success of OEM," stated Mark Tyler. "The company is only as good as its team and we have an outstanding team."

The Clopay building is located on the city's northwest side, at 2901 U.S. Highway 12.

OEM now has four locations including its 72,000 square foot facility in Woodville; a 55,000 square foot facility in Neillsville; a 10,000 square foot facility in Prentice and the facility in Baldwin (all in Wisconsin).

Tyler said the micro division is positioned for substantial growth, according to the announcement published by the St. Croix Economic Development Corp. The division will utilize a five-axis micro machining center and expanded Swiss style turning capacities.

In a related announcement, Tyler named Christian Gausman as the leader of the Baldwin facility.

Gausman is a native of Baldwin, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology from UW-Stout. While attending college, Gausman worked part-time at OEM as an intern in the quality department. He was later named project manager at OEM and has worked in various roles involving quality, customer service and engineering.

Gausman earned at Master of Science degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Stout since joining OEM, and is currently pursuing his MBA from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul.

OEM Fabricators (www.oemfab.com) is a leading contract manufacturer in Wisconsin.

The company was founded in 1986 with three employees in a 2,500 square foot facility and now employs more than 500 team members and reports sales of $75 million.

OEM designs and builds medium to heavy gauge components, subassemblies and turnkey products for a diverse customer base, including oil and gas exploration, construction, agriculture, power generation, electronics, medical devise, transportation, mining and defense industries.

Griffon Corporation has announced in June, 2009, that it would close its operations at Baldwin and Russia, Ohio, and consolidate them at its manufacturing plant located in Troy, Ohio. At the time, Clopay operated manufacturing facilities at Baldwin; Troy, Ohio; Russia, Ohio; and Auburn, Wash.

At one time, Clopay was Baldwin's largest employer, with some 335 employees, according to information on the village web site.

Griffon Corporation said that once the consolidations were completed in early 2011, it would result in estimated annual cash savings of more than $10 million.

Clopay Building Products Company is a leading manufacturer and marketer of residential, commercial and industrial garage doors to professional installing dealers and major home center retail chains.

The Baldwin facility had its roots with the IDEAL Door Co., founded in 1963 at Woodville, as a manufacturer of wooden garage doors.

In 1977, IDEAL ws purchased by the Automatic Garage Door Co. and moved its manufacturing facility to Baldwin, where it eventually became one of St. Croix County's largest employers.

Clopay acquired IDEAL Door, Phenix Door, and Automatic Door Co. in 1992.
