All state roads open, fewer travelers expected over holiday weekend

By RiverTown Staff

Despite the fact that roads in the state are now open officials with AAA-Wisconsin say there may be fewer cars on them this coming holiday weekend.

The auto club is predicting that for the first time this decade there will be fewer holiday travelers on the road this Fourth of July weekend.

Across the nation, AAA predicts that 40.45 million people will travel over the long weekend, down 1.3 percent from last year.

In the Midwest AAA expects 5.3 million travelers, down 1.1 percent from last year.

"Clearly gas prices are continuing to take a toll on people's travel plans, but the travel industry is responding with discounts, promotions and other incentives to get people traveling this holiday," said Tom Frymark, AAA Wisconsin regional president.

According to AAA, concerns about the economy are also playing a role in travel decisions.

Those travelers on the road will be paying more to stay there. According to the AAA fuel gauge on Wednesday afternoon, the national average for a gallon of gas was $4.09. In Wisconsin, the average price was slightly less at $4.05.

Despite flooding that closed portions of Interstate 94 in southern Wisconsin over the past couple of weeks, officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation report that all roads are now open.

While the roads are open DOT officials are warning motorists to be careful because of the numerous road construction projects around the state.

Officials warn that drivers should be on the lookout for slowdowns and heavy traffic in and around construction zones.

They also warn that law enforcement agencies will be strictly enforcing speed limits in construction zones. In Wisconsin, fines for traffic violations double in construction zones.

Up-to-date listing and maps of construction areas around the state are available on the DOT Web site at www.dot.wisconsin.gov. A link to DOT road conditions and construction zones pages is available on all RiverTown Newspaper Group newspaper Web sites. Simply select Traffic & Roads on the navigation bar.

Law enforcement will also be turning up the heat once again on Interstate 94 from Hudson to Eau Claire, according to Wisconsin State Patrol officials.

Called Summer Heat, the mobilization effort is aimed at stopping speeding and aggressive driving.

According to the State Patrol, law enforcement agencies from the State Patrol, Eau Claire, Dunn, and St. Croix counties along with the Hudson Police Department will be out in force to keep a check on traffic laws on the Interstate.

"As we approach the heavily traveled Fourth of July holiday period, the Summer Heat mobilization will strive to get drivers on I-94 to comply voluntarily with traffic laws to reduce crashes that cause deaths and serious injuries," says Dennis Hughes, chief of safety programs for the State Patrol Bureau of Transportation Safety.

"However, if voluntary compliance fails, officers who will be patrolling in greater numbers and for longer hours on the I-94 corridor will be prepared to ticket speeders and other violators," he added.

Elsewhere in the state the Summer Heat program will be in place along Highway 41 from Menomonee Falls to Marinette County.
