Elmwood man airlifted after motorcycle crash
SPRING VALLEY -- Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a crash involving two motorcycles at 8:55 p.m. Sunday night in Spring Valley, and an Elmwood man was airlifted to Regions Hospital for his injuries.
According to a press release from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, the crash occurred on Highway 29 at Wagon Trail Road between two motorcycles with a single occupant on each machine.
A 2008 Kawasaki, operated by Kyle J. Varnson of Hammond, was heading east on Highway 29 and slowed to turn right on Wagon Trail road when his friend, Devon K. Bengston, of Elmwood, struck the rear of Varnson’s motorcycle with his 2005 Harley Davidson. Both motorcycles lost control and crashed, according to the release.
Varnson was transported by Spring Valley EMS to River Falls Area Hospital for treatment of his injuries, the extent of which are unknown at this time. Bengston was taken by North Memorial Air Care to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with unknown injuries.
The press release states that neither driver was wearing a helmet and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the cause of the crash. A crash reconstruction will take place.
The incident remains under investigation by the Spring Valley Police Department, with assistance from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol.
Spring Valley Police were assisted by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, Spring Valley Fire and EMS, Elmwood Fire, River Falls EMS and North Memorial Health Care.
