Gabriel J. Steiner, 10 weeks
Died November 8, 1999Gabriel James Steiner, 10-week-old infant son of Chris R. and Jami (Petrasek) Steiner, of North Hudson, died of cardiac arrest Monday, Nov. 8. Survivors are his parents, Chris R. and Jami (Petrasek) Steiner of North Hudson; a brother, Christopher Jacob Steiner, 3; grandparents, Jim and Katie Petrasek of Turtle Lake and Robert and Judy Steiner of Hudson; great-grandparents, Louis Corbo of Maplewood Minn., Vivian Geretschlaeger of North St. Paul, Pete and Toni Petrasek of Maplewood, Minn., and Mary Steiner of Hudson. Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 11 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson with Pastor Dennis Nelson officiating. Pianist was Monica Weeks, who accompanied the vocalist, Pastor JoAnn Sorensen. Visitation was from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial was in Willow River Cemetery in Hudson. Memorials are preferred. The O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson was in charge of arrangements.
Carl P. Hjelseth, 82
Died November 8, 1999Carl Paul Hjelseth, 82, of Stillwater, and formerly of Hudson, died of a heart attack, Monday, Nov. 8 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Stillwater where he resided for a number of years.. He was born in Hudson, Jan. 3, 1917, the son of Peter O. and Emma (Erickson) Hjelseth. In 1936, he graduated from Hudson High School where he played football, baseball and basketball, four years in each sport, and sang in boys' glee club and the mixed chorus. He was married to Pearl Ebne in 1939, and later in 1964 to Elouise Alice Peterson. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Carpenters Local 87, the Eagles Lodge in Stillwater and American Legion Post No. 48. Survivors are a son, Ronald (Peggy) Hjelseth of St. Paul; three daughters, Carla O'Heaney of New York, Julie (Robert) Wegscheider of Woodbury, Minn., and Debra (Michael) Dragich of St. Paul; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Jane (Evenson-Hjelseth) Spalding of Hudson. Memorial services were at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 11 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Stillwater, with the Rev. Steve Molin officiating. The organist was Jane Gay, who accompanied the vocal soloist, Rayanna Stratmoen. Memorials are preferred to Stillwater Good Samaritan Care Center in Stillwater. Burial was in Willow River Cemetery in Hudson.
James A. Schullo, 64
Died November 13, 1999James Allen "Jim" Schullo, 64, a lifelong resident of Hudson, died of cancer Saturday, Nov. 13 at Hudson Medical Center. He was born July 8, 1935, in New Richmond, the son of Henry and Laura (Hudson) Schullo. He attended grade school at St. Patrick's Catholic School and graduated from Hudson High School in 1953. On Nov. 25, 1960, in Iowa, he was united in marriage to Wanda Hansen. For many years he was employed by the Andersen Corporation in Bayport where he began as a production worker. He worked with quality assurance, was promoted to assistant supervisor and retired in 1991. He was a member of the firm's Quarter Century Club. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and trout fishing. He was a member of the St. Croix Valley Rod & Gun Club, the Hudson Country Club and was a former member of the Hudson Elks Lodge No. 640. Surviving are his wife, Wanda; two sons, Dennis (Mary) Staberg of Hudson and Scott (Shauna) Schullo of Tampa, Fla.; two daughters, Deborah Villella of Fargo, N.D., and Jonelle (Robert) Keene of St. Paul; two sisters, Betty (Charles) Johnson and Joan (Jerry) Madsen, both of River Falls. Preceding him in death were his parents. A funeral service celebrating his life was at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson, with Pastor Dennis Nelson officiating. The organist accompanied congregational singing. Honorary casketbearers were Dick McConaughey, George Peterson, Clyde Christensen and Dan Schultz. Burial was in Willow River Cemetery. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 15 at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. Memorials are preferred to the family.
Bee C. Doermann, 90
Died November 8, 1999Bee (Cooper) Doermann, 90, of Stillwater and formerly of Afton, died Monday, Nov. 8, in Arden Hills, Minn. She was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, Sept. 7, 1909, the daughter of Ally and Mabel Cooper, and grew up, in Marshalltown, Deadwood, S.D., and Hollywood, Calif. In 1927, in California, she was married to Charles Allison Doermann. She was the former owner of the Berry Patch Loft in Afton and Stillwater. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Charles Allison Doermann in 1982; a son, Charles Allyn Doermann in 1980; a brother, Glenn Cooper; a daughter-in-law, Alice. Surviving are two daughters, Stephanie (Don) Vierling-Sulentic and Pamela (Thomas E.) Anderson; three grandchildren, Glenn (Linda) Doermann, and Sarah and Jennifer Anderson; two great-grandsons, Arnold and Kent Evans. Memorial services were at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12 at Ascension Episcopal Church in Stillwater. Burial is in Rosehill Memorial Garden in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Pearl E. Hetchler, 91
Died November 9, 1999Pearl E. Hetchler, 91, a former resident of Cornell, died Tuesday, Nov. 9 in Royal Palm Beach, Fla. She was born April 11, 1908, in Chippewa Falls, the daughter of Ernest and Florence (Beals) Stevens. On April 18, 1927, in Chippewa Falls, she was married to Ora Hetchler and they lived in Bloomer and Cornell before moving to Florida. Survivors are two daughters, Carolyn (Emery) Hyland of Lake Worth, Fla., and Doris (Terry) Snow of Bloomer; two sons, Roger (Mary) Hetchler of Hudson and Duane (Susan) Hetchler of Royal Palm Beach; a daughter-in-law, Pearl Hetchler of Bloomer; 28 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband, Ora in 1987, and a son, Harold. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 15 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Cornell. Burial was in the Cornell Cemetery.
George "Bud" Clymer, 79
Died November 9, 1999George Samuel "Bud" Clymer, 79, of Afton, died Tuesday, Nov. 9 at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul where he had been admitted for a heart condition. He was born in Afton, June 12, 1920, the son of Harry and Grace (Pennington,) Nelson, and attended school in Afton. On Nov. 17, 1945, in Somerset, he was married to Virginia Mercedes Rosenow. He lived his entire life in Afton where he farmed the land and raised cattle, before his retirement in 1965. He was handy in fixing things and was especially adept in doing electrical jobs and working with wood. Surviving are his wife, Virginia; two sons, Terry (Mary Lou) Clymer and Neil (Denise) Clymer, both of Afton; two daughters, Cathy (William) Muckala of Lakeland and Carole (Jerry) Engebretson of St. Paul; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Memorial services were at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12 at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor John Matthew officiating. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home, prior to the services. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Afton with family members serving as casketbearers. Memorials are preferred.
Donna Best, 70
Died November 10, 1999Donna Best, 70, of North Hudson, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, Nov. 10 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where she had been taken by ambulance earlier in the day. She was born Dec. 10, 1928, in St. Paul, the daughter of Harold and Marie (Schaeppi) Peterson, and graduated from Johnson High School in St. Paul where she was a homecoming queen and a member of the National Honor Society. Later she attended the University of Minnesota. She worked as a statistical clerk for the Great Northern Railroad until her marriage. On June 12, 1948, she was married to Martin Hugh Best at St. Peter's Catholic Church in St. Paul. In December 1976, she and her husband and family moved to Hudson from Naperville, Ill. During her 23 years in Hudson she served as a volunteer at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hudson Memorial Hospital and other organizations. She loved gardening, the beauty of flowers, bird watching, working crossword puzzles and shopping. Her family remembers her devotion to their welfare, her warm smile and her loving kindness. Surviving are her husband, Martin, of North Hudson; three sons, Martin (Sue) Best Jr., of Hudson, Thomas A. (Beth) Best of Lake Elmo, Minn., and Steven M. (Paulette) Best of Powder Springs, Ga.; two daughters, Cynthia (David) Malone of Tampa, Fla., and Julie (Lou) Moegenburg of Roberts; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, JoAnn Seibel of St. Paul and Delores Mitchell of Sun City, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, William Bachman and an aunt, Florence McClary of St. Paul. Funeral services were at 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 15 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Peter Szleszinski officiating. At the service the Hope Choir was accompanied by Elsie Sandquist. Solos were performed by Steven Best and Beth Best, a eulogy was read by Tom and Tonia Best and a scripture reading was given by Marty Best Jr. Burial was in Willow River Cemetery where casketbearers were Matt Best, Jonathan Best, David Malone Sr., Nick Best, David Malone Jr., and Ryan Corson. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 14 at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. Memorials are preferred to St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson.
