A two-vehicle head-on crash sent three people to area hospitals shortly after 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The accident happened 2 miles west of River Falls on CTH MM, east of Mann Lane. Evett Westphal, 40, of Hudson, driver of a van, was flown from the scene to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. She remains in critical condition. The driver of a pickup truck, Eric S. Meadows, 23, River Falls, was taken by ambulance to the River Falls Hospital, then transferred by helicopter to Regions. He was listed in serious condition. A passenger in the Westphal van, 21-year-old Tanner Westphal, was taken to Hudson Hospital where he was treated and released. According to the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department, Meadows was going west and Westphal east on CTH MM. Meadows was cited after he crossed the center line while going around a curve, striking Westphal. Both vehicles were destroyed. Charlie Cernohous retrieving a time capsule Chipping away at history

UW-River Falls maintenance worker Charlie Cernohous uses a hammer to get at a time capsule lodged inside a wall at the publications office of North Hall last Wednesday. The 14x11-inch copper box was sealed in the building's northwest corner when it was built 75 years ago in 1914. Cernohous, who attended grade school at North Hall back in the mid-1940s, retrieved the time capsule as part of UW-RF's 125th anniversary. The yearlong celebration kicks off next Wednesday. Chancellor Gary Thibodeau opened the box and displayed its contents during a ceremony Tuesday morning. See page A7 for complete story.
