Governor Knowles campground set to open

MADISON - The newly completed campground in Governor Knowles State Forest near Grantsburg is scheduled to open on Saturday May 1, 1999. A dedication ceremony for the campground is planned for later in May.

Governor Knowles State Forest serves as a resource protection zone for the St. Croix National Riverway and encompasses about 32,500 acres along a 55-mile stretch of wild and scenic countryside beside the St. Croix in Polk and Burnett Counties. The rustic camping area has 31 campsites, one of which is handicapped accessible.

As it is located in a state forest rather than a state park, the campground is not attended and does not offer extensive facilities; however canoeists on the St. Croix wishing to overnight can find the ideal spot in this campground overlooking the river. There is a river landing and a 600-foot trail connects to the campground and wayside.

In addition, Governor Knowles State Forest is adjacent to over 100,000 acres of county forests and the Fish Lake and Crex Meadow Wildlife Areas. Other state forests, including the Northern Highland/American Legion, Kettle Moraine, Black River, Flambeau and Brule River State Forests, also offer a wide range of recreational opportunities.

The campground is adjacent to the St. Croix River on Hwy. 70, west of Grantsburg. The entrance to the wayside also serves as the entrance to the campground. Advance reservations for the campground can be made using the new PARRCS system by calling 1-888-WI-PARKS (888-947-2757).
