Hoop Scoops
Two surprising results during the WIAC holiday basketball schedule were a loss apiece for Stevens Point (at home vs. Edgewood College of Madison) and Platteville (at a tourney in Iowa to Mid-America Nazarene, a Division II school). Both losses were under ten points, but show possible vulnerability in two teams considered to be potential top three finishers in the league. Eau Claire, meanwhile, came through its holiday tournament unscathed to emerge as the only unbeaten team in the league at 10-0.
Upper Iowa grabs Cenex title
One night after making nearly 50 percent of its field goal attempts in a 69-61 win over Marian College, the UW-River Falls men's basketball team shot just 37 percent from the field against Upper Iowa-and still nearly won.
Skaters hit stride
How much has the Wildcat hockey team improved this season? Last year the Cats didn't pick up their sixth win of the season until the regional playoffs in February and finished the year with a record of 6-16-0. This season, the Cats posted their sixth win before New Year's Day.
Northern Badger truly classic
Every year, between 40 and 50 individuals who compete at the Northern Badger Wrestling Classic end up at the WIAA State Tournament in February. This year's Classic, according to River Falls High School wrestling coach Dave Brandvold, may have been the toughest ever.
