Rabies clinic is Jan. 22

A rabies clinic will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at the River Falls Fire Hall.

Vaccinations will be available at reduced prices for rabies, distemper, Lymes disease and cat leukemia.

Veterinarian Dr. Don Vezina will administer the shots.

Play auditions scheduled

Auditions for two one-act plays to be produced by the River Falls Community Theatre in February will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 17-18 at the River Falls Public Library.

The plays "Three on a Bench" and "Stay Carl Stay" will be staged Feb. 25, 26 and 27 at the River Falls Golf Club. A total of five women and five men, ages 16-65, are needed to fill the roles.

No experience is necessary and no preparation is required for the auditions.

Free throw championship is Jan. 15

All boys and girls ages 10-14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2000 Knights of Columbus International Free Throw Championship. It will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, at noon at the St. Bridget Parish School gymnasium.

There is no entry fee. Winners advance to district level competition.

PTO sells savings cards

The Westside Elementary School Parent/ Teacher Organization is selling Westside Savings Cards.

The cards entitle the holder to experience cost-savings at 27 local businesses. The card costs $5 and may be used until Sept. 1.

All proceeds go toward the Westside Playground Fund.

Cards may be purchased at Westside school, call 425-1815; or Foster Sports, call 425-8859 and ask for John.

Jan. 16 breakfast, brunch will benefit Camp

A pancake breakfast and brunch will be held on Sunday, Jan. 16, at the River Falls Moose Lodge from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Eggs, sausage, hash browns, pancakes, French toast, sweet rolls, orange juice, coffee and milk will be available. The cost is $4.50 for adults, $3.50 for seniors and children under 12. Children under 5 may eat free.

All proceeds go toward Camp Needlepoint for diabetic children.

Financial seminar offered

"Smart Women Finish Rich," a financial planning seminar, will be offered at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Coaches' Grill and Pizzeria, 123 S. Main St.

Jim Williamson, an investment representative from Edward Jones Investment Company, will host the seminar. A guest speaker will provide the public with financial security information.

The seminar is free, but those attending are asked to call 426-6652 to reserve a seat.

Westside PTO will meet

The Westside Elementary School PTO will meet Tuesday, Jan. 18, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the media center. The agenda will include: playground update; family fun/movie nights; PTO meeting survey results; middle school transition night; safety patrol treats; savings cards and spring fundraisers.

Jazz trumpet player will solo with school bands

Dominic Spera - jazz trumpet player, composer and conductor - will perform as a guest soloist during a concert set for 7 p.m., Jan. 31 at River Falls High School.

Spera will perform with the two high school jazz bands and the Meyer Middle School band during a combined jazz concert.

He will also work with students during the day.

Spera performed professionally for 10 years in New York City, doing work in TV and radio shows. He played lead trumpet in several Broadway shows, including "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," "The Roar of the Grease Paint, The Smell of the Crowd," "Stop the World, I Want to Get Off" and "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever."

Spera is now professor emeritus of music at Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. In 1995 he released two new CDs: "Dominic Spera Big Band Jazz" and "Chops Don't Fail Me Now."

Since 1998 he has served as soloist, conductor and education director for the Hawaii International Jazz Festival.

Admission for the Jan. 31 concert is $3 for adults, $1.50 for students or $6 for families.

Sarah Gillert, guest speaker

"The American Missionary Fellowship Hour" will feature Sarah Gillert, 1998 UW-RF graduate, as this week's guest speaker.

Gillert will share how she came to change her religious viewpoints.

The interview will air on Channel 19 daily from Jan. 17 to Jan. 23 at 7 a.m., 12 noon and 8 p.m.

and on Channel 12 at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday and 6:30 p.m. on Monday (from Jan. 14 to Jan. 21).

Youth wrestling sets registration

Registration for those interested in participating in the youth wrestling program will be held Saturday, Jan. 8, from 9 a.m. - noon, at the Parks and Recreation Department, 210 Lewis St., River Falls.

Sessions for wrestlers in grades 3 and up will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning the week of Jan. 18. Sessions for those in grades K through 2 will be held on Mondays beginning the week of Jan. 25.

RFYBA tourney Jan. 22

The River Falls Youth Basketball Association (RFYBA) is holding a boys' basketball tournament on Saturday, Jan. 22, at Greenwood Elementary School, Meyer Middle School, Rocky Branch Elementary School and River Falls High School.

The tournament includes teams in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Thirty-four teams from Altoona, Amery, Glenwood City, Hastings, Hudson, Osceola, Prescott, Red Wing, River Falls and Turtle Lake will represent their towns.

Games will begin at 8 a.m. with championships at 7:15 p.m. Concessions, programs and a raffle drawing at 2 p.m. will also be part of the day's activities.

RFYBA is self-supporting, allowing the subsidization of player costs through this tournament fundraiser.
