Ellsworth baseball team on its way to state tourney again
VIROQUA - Neither rain nor mud nor Barron could stop the Ellsworth High School baseball team from winning their second straight WIAA Division 2 sectional title and second straight trip to the state baseball tournament.
The game was delayed almost two hours to get the field in playing shape after an afternoon downpour in the La Crosse area. The rain held off long enough for the No. 6 ranked Panthers (16-3 overall) to come back from an early 1-0 deficit to take a 5-1 lead 5-1 lead by the third inning and add two runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth while pitcher Brady Yanish and EHS defense, led by two amazing at-the-fence outfield catches by Dan Giese and Dennis Schutz, held back the Golden Bears (14-6 overall).
Both the Panthers lead-off batter Giese and No. 9 hitter Tyler Koller led the team in hitting with Isaac Hines and Schutz and Tyler Marson driving in runs as well.
Ellsworth will play the 6 p.m. state semifinal game against the winner of the Denmark Sectional which will be completed today. No. 2 Lodi and No. 7 Waupun will square off in the other semifinal.
