WOODBURY — A White Bear Lake woman has been charged with sex trafficking, promoting prostitution and money laundering using a business in Woodbury. Shixun Lan, 51, was arrested Sept. 11 following an investigation by the East Metro Sex Trafficking task force.
STILLWATER — A 26-year-old Mound, Minn. man was sentenced in Washington County District Court last week for electronic communication describing sexual conduct with a minor. Christopher Allen Boder was sentenced to one year in jail, two years probation and a $3,000 fine. According to the complaint: In May 2016, police posted on a social media application designed for anonymously sharing secrets online. The application has also been known to be used to engage in illegal activity, including the sexual solicitation of juveniles.
COTTAGE GROVE — Parks and Recreation held its final river access event for the summer, but it certainly won't be the last for the city. The sold-out sessions were filled by 40 eager canoers paddling along the Mississippi River backwaters in morning and afternoon sessions Aug. 18. Earlier this summer, the city held an Explore Grey Cloud Island event to re-familiarize the community with the area on the edge of the city. The city is planning similar events for the future, to continue encouraging residents to be active near the river.
WOODBURY — An Amery, Wis. man was sentenced in Washington County District Court for soliciting prostitution. Richard Mark Bottolfson, 29, was sentenced July 18 after he contacted someone he believed to be a teenager for sex. According to the criminal complaint: Police used a classifieds website in January to post an ad on the women-seeking-men section, posing as a 15-year-old female. Bottolfson responded to the ad asking to meet in person. Police, posing as the girl, told him to meet in an apartment in Woodbury.
NEWPORT — A new workout option previously untapped in south Washington County will be opening in Newport. Ben Smith and Shawn Racine of Hastings are planning to open Made2Live CrossFit at 785 20th St., just off Highway 61. CrossFit is a high-intensity workout program that incorporates interval training, weightlifting, gymnastics and more. Made2Live will offer hourlong classes seven times daily on weekdays and twice on Saturdays. Classes will be held six days a week: Monday through Saturday.
A Woodbury woman is facing charges for stealing money last year using a fundraising website similar to GoFundMe. Kaitlyn Marie Hugo, 24, is facing charges of felony theft by swindle. According to the criminal complaint: Hugo made a YouCaring page for a 5-year-old boy with Leukemia on behalf of the boy's father, who was facing a significant amount of hospital bills for the treatment. Funds from the YouCaring page were deposited directly into Hugo's account, and 57 people donated from May to September 2017. The total amount donated was nearly $5,000.
COTTAGE GROVE — An engine fire in the south end of Cottage Grove left a vehicle totaled Aug. 22. According to the Cottage Grove Fire Department, the driver was traveling southbound on Manning Avenue when the vehicle started smoking under the hood around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The department received calls from drivers behind the vehicle, reporting that the car was releasing heavy smoke. They also tried to alert him by honking or signaling to him that something was wrong, the driver told firefighters.
WOODBURY — Woodbury Days held Aug. 24-26 is going little in its 40th year — by adding more fun and games for the kids. Woodbury Days Council President Kati Cheney said this year the handful of new events are targeted at a younger audience. New kids' craft booths throughout the weekend include a clay donut workshop, tiny robot building, LEGO dogs, fusebeads creations, slime-making and more.
WOODBURY — An Eden Prairie man is facing two felony counts of filming pornographic images of minors. According to the criminal complaint: Dean Andrew Avery, 48, bought clothing for three girls under the age of 10 and asked them to change into the different outfits, including bikini swimsuits. He asked them to strike poses or do the splits, and would focus the shots on the genital areas. Avery can be seen in the videos in a Windgate Road home. He was arrested Aug. 2 on a search warrant.
MISSISSIPPI RIVER — An early-morning oil spill in South St. Paul has spread as far south as Grey Cloud Island. Union Pacific spokeswoman Kristen South said a train derailed around 2 a.m. Aug. 8, causing a diesel tank on a locomotive to be punctured, spilling 3,200 gallons into the Mississippi River.
