The 2017 River Fall Area Hospital Foundation's Fall Fling raised more than $65,000 for hospital programs and services, including nearly $10,000 garnered through live and silent auctions.
ELLSWORTH — Amy Viellieux is Pierce Pepin Cooperative Services' Live Better Community Service Award winner. She received the award and a $100 Visa gift card Monday, Oct. 30, for her selfless volunteer work through St. Croix Valley Restorative Justice and Narcotics-Anonymous.
Pierce County Farm Service Agency will begin mailing ballots to eligible farmers and ranchers for the 2017 FSA County Committee elections Monday, Nov. 6. Producers must return ballots to the Ellsworth U.S. Department of Agriculture Service Center by Dec. 4 to ensure that their vote is counted. "The 2017 Pierce County Committee election is held in Local Administrative Area #1. LAA#1 includes the townships of Clifton, River Falls, Martell, Gilman and Spring Lake", County Executive Director Aaron Moore explained.
American Heritage is excited to announce they are now operated by North Shore Healthcare. American Heritage is a 50-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation center located in Hammond. The center has been providing vital skilled nursing and rehabilitation services to residents with a wide range of medical needs since 1975. With this change in ownership also comes a name change. The center is now called Hammond Health Services.
About 200 people gathered Oct. 12 at Stillwater Middle School for the Make It OK Community Conversation. Make It OK is a campaign to reduce the stigma of mental illness. The event included Minnesota Public Radio presenter John Moe, who hosted the first season of the "Hilarious World of Depression" podcasts earlier this year sponsored by HealthPartners and Make It OK. Moe said he continues to hear from listeners who find inspiration from the comedians who have dealt with depression.
Members of Pierce Pepin Cooperative Services are helping stock food shelves in Pierce and Pepin counties through the co-op's Operation Round Up program. Eight food pantries were each awarded $1,200 at the board's October meeting — Pierce County Food Pantry, Elmwood Food Pantry, Plum City Food Pantry, Prescott Area Food Shelf, River Falls Food Pantry, Spring Valley Community Food Pantry, Pepin County Food Pantry and Pepin-Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran-Food Pantry. The donations were presented to pantry representatives during the regional Hunger Prevention Council meeting Oct. 25.
A late-season antlerless only deer hunt proposed for three southeastern Minnesota permit areas with deer populations significantly above goal levels will not be conducted in January 2018. Public input collected at two meetings and online showed no clear consensus either for or against the hunt, said Paul Telander, wildlife section chief for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
The Free Clinic of Pierce and St. Croix Counties has received a $20,000 grant from the United Way St. Croix Valley. "The United Way St. Croix Valley does a phenomenal job in improving the lives and communities in Pierce, St. Croix and Polk counties," said Amy Muzzy, the newly hired fundraising and communications coordinator. "It is an honor to partner with them again. This grant will be instrumental in providing those in need, who qualify, the ability to receive health care."
ST. PAUL — About 100 Minnesota law enforcement agencies will accept unneeded prescription drugs Saturday, Oct. 28. "There were more opioid-related deaths last year than the year before,' state Attorney General Lori Swanson said. "Safely disposing of prescription drugs that are no longer needed keeps them from being diverted or abused, or being accidentally swallowed by children,"
The community is invited to First Presbyterian Church, 1901 Vine St., Hudson, beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday Nov. 2 to take a walk in the shoes of someone with dementia through the use of the internationally known Virtual Dementia Tour. The tour is a 10-minute sensory experience that gives those with full cognition the ability to understand what the disease of dementia sounds, looks and feels like.
