Young singers in the Hudson area and St. Croix River Valley are invited to join The River City Chorale Youth Choir for its fall/winter season. The Youth Choir is open to children in grades three through six. Rehearsals will be 5-6 p.m. Tuesdays starting Oct. 24 and will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1901 Vine St., Hudson. The Youth Choir will perform along with the RCC Christmas Chorale and the RCC Ensemble Singers at two concerts at 3 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson.
Preliminary data from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation indicates that 41 people died in Wisconsin traffic crashes last month, making it the safest September in terms of traffic deaths since the end of World War II. Traffic fatalities last month were six fewer than September 2016 and 16 fewer compared to the five-year average for September. The deadliest September occurred in 1973 with 116 deaths.
STOCKHOLM, Wis. — Throughout the summer, the village of Stockholm has thrown a party on the second Friday of each month. The last chance in 2017 to enjoy this village-wide festivity, known as the "Stockholm Stroll," with free food and drink, artist demonstrations, games and cozy bonfires, will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13. The event is free and open to the public.
EAU CLAIRE — Firefighters from 15 departments throughout west-central Wisconsin agreed on the toughest challenge as they prepared for an upcoming state certification test: The ladder challenge was not going to be easy.
WESTconsin Credit Union is offering $1,000 scholarships for up to 13 graduating high school seniors from the class of 2018 as part of their scholarship program. The goal is to award one scholarship in each community served by a WESTconsin office. These areas include Altoona, Amery, Baldwin, Barron, Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire, Ellsworth, Hudson, Menomonie, New Richmond, Prescott, River Falls and Spring Valley. Scholarship recipients will be announced end of May 2018.
LAKE ELMO, Minn. — On Sunday, Oct. 8, seven local chefs will take part in an epic culinary competition with the goal of raising money for local mental health programs, substance use programs and Minnesota's suicide prevention phone lines.

LA CROSSE — Rep. Ron Kind announced that his office is now accepting applications from individuals interested in attending one of our nation's service academies. Students must submit their applications by Friday, Oct. 20. "I am always impressed by the motivated, disciplined young men and women that seek to attend our nation's military academies," Kind said. "Each year I am able to nominate outstanding students from western and central Wisconsin to become our military leaders of the future, and I'm looking forward to meeting this year's applicants."
WASHINGTON—The U.S. Supreme Court will not hear a Minnesota case challenging a state law that allows sex offenders to remain locked up indefinitely. The court announced Monday, Oct. 2, that it will not take up the case. In not hearing it, the court allows an early 2017 ruling by a federal appeals court to stand. The appeals decision overturned a lower court decision that found the sex offender program unconstitutional. The appeals ruling removed requirements for immediate changes.
Minuteman Press in Hudson has been named the Central St. Croix Chamber of Commerce's Business of the Month for September 2017. Minuteman Press has been an active member since joining in 2009. The company was also awarded Business of the Year in 2013. They have been involved by sponsoring events, providing printing, hosting Java Jumpstarts, and attending events.
