Totty pulls questionable endorsement from Web site
By Brady Bautch, RiverTown Newspaper Group
The endorsement of Steve Breitung, Pepin Village which was posted last week on the Web site of Mark Totty, Democratic candidate for the 91st Assembly District, has been pulled.
Brietung said that he doesn't ever recall being officially asked for an endorsement by Totty, who is a Pepin resident.
"I can't remember ever being asked and don't remember ever signing an endorsement," Breitung said.
When asked by RiverTowns.net last Friday about the endorsement Totty said Breitung had signed his nomination papers.
"He signed my nomination papers and at the top of the form it says that whoever signs nominates and endorses the candidate," Totty said.
However signing a candidate's nomination papers may not constitute an official endorsement according to Kyle Richmond, spokesman for the State Elections Board.
"No it doesn't," Richmond said. "You can sign someone's nomination papers and vote someone else."
Richmond added that normal protocol is that once a candidate has gathered enough signatures and is officially on the ballot the candidate then goes and asks for an official endorsement. Brietung, a Democrat, says he had mixed feelings about being listed as endorsing Totty and hasn't made up his mind on which Democrat running for the 91st Assembly seat to vote for in Tuesday's primary.
"I am undecided at this time," Brietung said Thursday.
Totty is challenging Rep. Barbara Gronemus, Whitehall, in Tuesday's primary election.
