Long-time officer seeks Pierce Co. sheriff job Tom Gunderson, a 21-year veteran with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, says he’s a candidate for the office of Pierce County sheriff.
Gunderson, 41, said his decision to run is a natural progression in a very full career. He has worked 14 years as a patrol sergeant, 14 years as department K-9 handler, 15 years as a state certified firearms instructor and eight years as a member of the Emergency Response Unit entry team. A graduate of River Falls High School, Gunderson attended UW-River Falls, majoring in sociology/criminology. He also completed law enforcement training through Chippewa Valley Technical College and has additional certifications in supervisory management and firearms instruction. During his time with the department, Gunderson has seen tremendous growth in the county’s population and within the Sheriff’s Department. “There are many challenges currently facing the county,” said Gunderson, “and it’s important that the Sheriff’s Department and the County Board work together in a collaborative and creative way to address these challenges. “If elected, I intend to work with all parties to find solutions that best serve the safety and security of both the citizens of Pierce County and the officers who serve them.” Gunderson and fellow officer Richard Johnson established the Pierce County DARE Wagon Train eight years ago. The program was facing budget cuts so the wagon train was set up to help defray costs of materials for the program. Gunderson lives in River Falls with his wife Liz and daughters Megan and Molly. |
