After a decade as an orange eyesore to many in Cottage Grove, the former Home Depot site found a new tenant.

TJ Maxx and HomeGoods opened Oct. 28. The 40,000-square-foot complex is the off-price retailers first dual site in Minnesota, and the first occupancy of the building since the Home Depot closed in 2008. Planet Fitness opened an 18,000-square-foot facility in November at the opposite end of the site.

To redevelop the site, the city of Cottage Grove took the unorthodox step of buying the Home Depot property at 80th Street and East Point Douglas Road for about $2.25 million in 2015. It then sold the building for $1.95 million to EBL&S Development, which owns the space currently occupied by Hy-Vee in the other end of that complex in the Gateway North district.
