Though the retail portion of the River Falls Shopko will close, its optical business will continue operation as a freestanding location.

About 80 locations will relocate from their current homes inside Shopko stores, following the acquisition of Shopko Optical by Monarch Alternative Capital LP, according to a press release.

"We are excited to welcome Shopko Optical into our portfolio and to invest in the company's growth as we move forward with our strategy, " said Andrew Herestein, co-founder and managing principal of Monarch.

An address for the River Falls location has not been finalized, but the aim is to open the standalone locations near Shopko stores, according to Shopko Optical Interim CEO Jim Eisen.

The current location will continue to serve patients until the new store is opened.

Shopko currently operates seven freestanding locations in Wisconsin, including Eau Claire, Oshkosh, Mensha, Rothschild, Omaha, Mequon and Waukesha.

A total of 42 freestanding locations will be established in the state in 2019, according to Eisen.

Several of those locations will be open in the next few months.

Further growth is expected in 2020.

In March it was announced Shopko was closing all of its retail stores. At that time a release stated the liquidation process would be complete in 10-12 weeks.
