Hallstrom's Florist and Greenhouses closed the greenhouse portion of the business, but will keep the flower shop at 317 Bush St. open to continue to serving customers.
"We are not completely closing," said Dave Hallstrom, "but the growing operation will close."
In business in Red Wing since 1886, Hallstroms will sell the greenhouse and surrounding property on Hallstrom Drive. "It's listed for sale," Dave said.
Closing down the greenhouse which has been in a family for four generations is not an easy decision, according to Dave, but it was a decision that was important and necessary for the business.
"We will continue to operate our florist and sweet shop in downtown Red Wing," Dave said. "We will offer our fresh floral arrangements, blooming plants, gift items, and tropical foliage plants."
This is possible because their fresh flowers come from other sources.
"We can get fresh flowers in almost daily," Dave said. "We constantly have fresh products in off the truck."
Diane Hallstrom said they will still provide hanging baskets. "We do a lot of urns at each of the cemeteries," she said, "so we will still be doing those, but we will be buying them instead of growing them."
Diane said Dave used to grow 50,000 four-and-a-half-inch pots and 5,000 hanging baskets of flowers each season. She added that it has become more difficult now with the bigger stores selling bedding plants in addition to their other items.
"It is a loss leader for them," she said, "but for us, it is our bread and butter."
"A lot of other floral shops have closed," Dave said. "These are changing times. It is like farming now where a lot of the farms have been bought up by the larger farmer."
Diane said that by keeping the downtown store, "We can still sell the emotion and fun of flowers. We want our community to know we are still here. We are grounded in Red Wing. This shop isn't going anywhere, and the Hallstroms aren't going anywhere."
Dave added that "The Hallstrom family cherishes each one of our customers, community, and friends, and we pledge to provide you with continued quality products and service like we have for the last 133 years."
