"Dear Martin" author Nic Stone visited Monday, Feb. 25, at the Hastings Art Center to discuss the book as part of Hastings Reads. Stone shared her experiences and writing process.

"Every book I write is about being welcome, especially those who aren't always represented," Stone said to the filled room.

"Dear Martin," greatly inspired by the 2012 shooting and death of Jordan Davis in Jacksonville, Fla., follows the story of high school senior Justyce McAllister who ends up wrongfully in handcuffs.

"This boy is confronting racism but also his feelings about those who are different from him," Stone said of the book.
