ELLSWORTH -- Some 450 pounds of trout from a pond booth at the Pierce County Fair were reported to be dying at 10:11 a.m. Aug. 10 by a member of the Eau Galle Rush River Sportsman’s Club, who was running the booth at the time.

Whether this incident is by accident or a part of a “malicious act” is still unknown, according to a Pierce County investigator’s initial report.

According to the member who reported the mystery, this had never happened in the history of the trout pond’s time at the Pierce County Fair.

The exact cause of death is believed to be from a foreign substance that was introduced to the pond. This did not dissipate as the trout were kept in a closed system of circulating water.

The trout pond was emptied, cleaned, refilled with water and restocked with fresh trout for the remainder of the fair.

Total loss estimate exceeds $2,200 .
