The annual Hudson Artful Garden Tour is scheduled for Saturday, June 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, June 30 from noon to 4 p.m.
All proceeds from the garden tour go to support the hanging flower baskets in the Hudson downtown business district. Seven fine gardens will be featured on the tour:
The historical Octagon House gardens are lush with perennial heritage plantings nestled next to the carriage house and surrounding the vintage home. Volunteers have added touches of annual flowers in pink, rose and burgundy to liven up many perennials in the gardens.
The garden of the Fellrath family will please tour-goers with a bright colorful mixture of blooming annuals that are blended with vibrant perennials. Pottery and stone are used to enhance places throughout the garden and especially in the delightful fairy gardens.
Against a backdrop of woods and mature trees the campus of Hudson Hospital & Clinic landscape design includes carefully tended gardens along with outdoor patios and pathways for patients, families and tour visitors to enjoy. Tour goers are encouraged to find calmness and a time for contemplation by walking the labyrinth tucked in a quiet place behind the hospital. The hospital healing gardens feature locally made sculpture bird feeders that are visible from each inpatient room window. The community garden is part of the St. Croix County Community Health Improvement Process (CHIP) initiative. Each year, that garden harvests fresh, locally grown produce that is served to patients, visitors and employees.
Venturing to North Hudson the tour will feature the garden of Jean Vanden Heuvel. This garden includes a variety of annuals and perennials as well as a "butterfly way station," designated since 2009, which the owner has named "Flutter Inn."
Continuing in North Hudson, the garden of Birgith Kordt will entice visitors with amazing lush plantings, many incredible sculptures, whimsical light catchers and stone mushrooms.
Going north up-river the tour will lead to the gardens of Alyce Sime. These gardens are a family project with fairy gardens, succulent plantings, metal sculptures and a picnic table set for dinner overlooking their 9-hole golf course. The gardens ramble near the scenic home overlooking the St. Croix River.
Drive on to the garden of Tom and Kelly Spaniol near Somerset. These are incredible gardens with sturdy retaining walls to showcase the perennial plants, annual colorful floral garden plantings, and 14 raised vegetable beds. These gardens are enhanced by views of Bass Lake.
Tickets for the Artful Garden Tour will be for sale at the Octagon House and all of the gardens on the tour. Tickets are $12 for a self guided tour. On Saturday, June 29 the Hudson Trolley will offer a ride to all of the gardens. Reservations for the trolley should be made by calling 651-324-4075 and booking by credit card. The cost for the combination trolley and tour ticket is $25.
The Artful Garden Tour is sponsored by the Hudson Women's Club, with assistance from the Hudson Home and Garden Club and Hudson Independent Business Association.
