For nearly three decades HOPE Coalition has supported victims of abuse and sexual assault. This spring the nonprofit is asking for the community’s help to continue to provide crucial services.

HOPE Coalition is funded about 90% by contracts and grants, but restrictions on how those monies can be spent leave gaps, including for staff salaries and programs focused on prevention, board member Kris Kvols said.

To make up the difference, the organization started its 2019 fundraising efforts with a six-week kickoff campaign running through May.

Donors had given around $24,000 as of Monday, close to a third of the way to the yearlong fundraising goal of $75,000, HOPE Coalition development coordinator Linda Flanders said.

“That is very exciting,” Flanders said of the fundraising total. She said HOPE Coalition greatly appreciates the financial support and recognition of the organization’s role in the community.

It was a year of change in 2018 for HOPE Coalition, one of several area nonprofits that moved out of the Professional and Community Center on West Fourth Street after owner Mayo Clinic Health System announced plans to close the former hospital building. HOPE Coalition relocated temporarily to United Lutheran Church and Christ Episcopal Church in Red Wing. Planning is underway to find a permanent space, the organization said.

Throughout the moving process, HOPE Coalition said it assisted around 1,700 people who sought help in 2018.

Red Wing Police Chief Roger Pohlman said his department works with HOPE Coalition advocates to ensure victims of sexual assault or domestic violence are treated with sensitivity and not revictimized.

“That’s the most important thing - making sure that we do the best we can for the victims and help them get the care and recovery that they need,” Pohlman said.

HOPE Coalition provides domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault and basic needs services in Goodhue and Wabasha counties as well as western Pierce County in Wisconsin. Haven of Hope, the organization’s domestic violence shelter, takes in women and their children from across the state and sometimes from other states as needed for a resident’s safety.

HOPE Coaltion also is part of the Goodhue County Sexual Assault Multi-Disciplinary Action Response Team, or SMART, a multi-agency effort to improve response to survivors of sexual assault.
