With a statewide initiative to promote the dairy industry, Pierce County is doing its part in hosting a Dairy Breakfast.
Son-Bow Farms, Inc., families of Jay and Kristi Richardson, John Freund, Jeff Coss and Gabe Weix, are hosting Pierce County’s Dairy Breakfast on Saturday, June 21, at their farm in Maiden Rock, north of Hwy. 10 just off CTH CC. Signs will be up and visible.
Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to noon. Bring your appetites to enjoy Dad’s Belgian Waffles, sausages, ice cream, deep-fried cheese curds, milk and coffee.
Dairy breakfasts remain a tradition because they bring dairy farmers and consumers closer together to share appreciation of dairy heritage and the beauty of a Wisconsin dairy farm. This is an opportunity to gain a better understanding of dairy farming today and to see the passion dairy farmers invest in their industry.
The dairy industry alone contributes $26.5 billion annually to Wisconsin’s economy. While it is understood dairy is important to diet and wellbeing, it is also important to showcase the effort going into producing our favorite food.
The dairy industry in Pierce County would not have remained strong if it had not been for its diversity of dairy farms. Wisconsin is home to 1 million cows, with herd sizes varying from small to large, but still 99 percent are owned and cared for by families.
Son-Bow Farms has evolved since 1994 from milking in a 50-cow tie stall dairy operation to milking 950 cows three times a day, in a double 20 herringbone parlor. The Families of Son-Bow Farms, Inc., look forward to hosting the hundreds of visitors who will be enjoying the dairy breakfast on the farm.
A highlight of the breakfast will be educational tram tours throughout the farm’s three freestall sand-bedded barns, illustrating farming practices focused on cow care and comfort, viewing of the milking parlor, an antique tractor display and educational kid’s activities related to the dairy industry.
Abundant parking is provided and tram rides will bring visitors right up to the breakfast. Handicapped parking is also being provided. The saying goes, “come rain or shine,” we will still host the breakfast. Door prizes will be given away throughout the morning provided by many generous local businesses. Sponsors include: Pierce County Dairy Promotion Committee in cooperation with Pierce County Farm Bureau and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board.
In supporting county communities, we are collecting donations at the breakfast, with a goal of $5,000 for the county’s food pantries. Already, Ag Partners Coop, AgStar Financial Services, Arneson Insurance Agency, Value Implement and Son-Bow Farms have teamed up to add an extra $1,500, and the Pierce County Dairy Promotion Committee pledged a matching $1,000 donation.
All of the people involved in this fundraiser hope this is only the beginning and this partnership can grow and flourish for many years to come. Son-Bow Farms, Inc., is located at W2686 390th Ave., Maiden Rock.
