A fusion athleticism and artistry rolls into town tomorrow afternoon. Mr. B’s Joybox Express is a custom-designed bike - complete with a trio of cyclists and a 350-pound piano.
The team is traversing 2,000 miles through cities and towns along the Mississippi River Road to perform educate and inspire blues, jazz and cycling appreciation. The group plans for a 5 p.m. performance Sunday Sept. 14 at Hobgoblin Music.
Mr. B's Joybox Express is fronted by Mark “Mr. B” Braun, an internationally recognized jazz and blues pianist. Braun earned his musicianship directly from the first generation of blues and boogie pianists including Little Brother Montgomery, Boogie Woogie Red and Blind John Davis.
His whimsical piano-on-wheels concept results from the time-honored tradition of traveling shows and a personal lifetime passion for movement and music.
“I am convinced that I am a better musician because I have always been active in sports,” Braun said. “A lot of people find art and athletics to be mutually exclusive, but I see clearly how both played a pivotal role as I learned valuable life lessons about endurance, ambition, passion, failure and achievement.”
He said he started the Mr. B’s Joybox Express as a vehicle to spread the joy of music and movement and help communities raise support for youth arts and athletics programs.
