Phoenix Theatre's annual summer community musical production will be "Into the Woods." The epic modern fairytale - about wishes, family, and the choices we make - will run two weekends starting Friday, July 19.
James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score has been called enchanting and touching with its touches of dark comedy.
Taken from the Brothers Grimm collection of fairy tales, the story follows the Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of the Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break it. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them with disastrous results.
The "Into the Woods" cast includes a blend of local veteran performers and some new faces on the Sheldon stage. The company features Derek Achen, Michelle Braun, Peyton Catron, Emma Cory, Jessica Edwards, Lucas Flom, Chase Gilbertson, Chris Heineman, Chelsea Indrehus, Sarah Kiczula, Cory Koplin, Christina Kowalchyk, Brendin Larson, Alison Metzen, Helene Olson-Reed, Robin Pfeifer, Yesenia Sanchez, Laurel Stinson, Brian Sutton, Jacqueline West, Matthew Williams and Charlie Woodruff.
Sean Dowse directs.
