RIVER FALLS -- From first dates to seasoned couples, hopeful beginnings and quick endings, the River Fall’s Community Theatre’s “Flings, Fries and Funnies” explores the hilarity of love and relationships.

The show features six one-act performances. The acts stick to the Valentine’s Day theme.

“Blind Date” with David Markson and Jennifer Friedman follows two people trying to make good first impressions after being set up by a friend.

“Short Term Affairs” with Beth Ireland and Nathan Ireland imagines a dating service that focuses on finding someone’s imperfect match.

The UWRF Improv Troupe brings humor to relationships, with help from the audience.

“Cornbread and Beans” with Cindy Jacboson, Denny Cooper and Patrice Veit follows a first date with two people who seem to have nothing in common at all.

“Phoning It In” with Nathan Ireland and Aleisha Miller tells one couple’s story with all of its technological interruptions.

“Golden Arches” with Barrie Mayer, Peter Bloch, Michelle Myhre and Teri Woestman features a long-married couple that has become too used to each other.

Each one is a humorous, entertaining snapshot of life and love, their everyday difficulties and joys.

Though the situations in the performances are hilariously absurd, they are also relatable. Most will know the excitement and nerves of a first date, and the awkwardness when it doesn’t quite go right. Or the familiarity of an established relationship, and how easily it can be taken for granted.

Though the one acts are relatively short, the actors engage the audience with the characters and storyline. Audiences will connect with the performances much as they would in a full-length play.

The stage is set simply but effectively for these short stories. The size of the setting allows audiences to be further drawn in.

Remaining shows for “Flings, Fries and Funnies” are 7 p.m. Feb. 20-22 at Junior’s Restaurant and Tap House. Tickets are available in advance at Junior’s or at the door.
