RED WING -- In an email to parents on Sept. 10, Red Wing Activities Director Paul Hartmann announced there will be no homecoming varsity football game this year.

The Wingers were slated to play La Crescent, but Hartmann said two weeks ago he was notified that the Lancers wouldn't be coming due to a lack of numbers.

Hartmann spoke with the Republican Eagle on Sept. 11 about the cancellation, saying La Crescent was slated as the homecoming game prior to his hiring this summer. Hartmann said La Crescent was always planning to play a junior varsity team.

Multiple times the district tried to speak with La Crescent since the cancellation. Hartmann said they even offered playing the Wingers junior varsity squad to make a more even playing field. Hartmann said they have no received any response from La Crescent on resolving the cancellation.

In a continued effort to keep a varsity game on the schedule, Hartmann reached out to schools all over the Midwest, saying they were close to securing a game with a South Dakota or Illinois school. Unfortunately, a game couldn't come together.

In the email, Hartmann said the Wingers will have multiple sporting events on Sept. 27:

  • Boys and Girls cross-country, 4 p.m., Red Wing High School
  • seventh-grade football, 4 p.m., Twin Bluff Middle School
  • eight-grade football, 4 p.m., Marshall Field
  • girls' soccer, 7 p.m., Marshall Field

Hartmann said it was a difficult task securing a soccer game on Sept. 27, calling many districts to make a deal. Luckily for the Wingers, Rochester Century agreed to play.

Thus far, Hartmann has noticed a positive reaction from parents in the district. Hartmann said he also understands why some parents would be frustrated and said he "feels" for the football players who won't get to play in a homecoming game.

However, the district will still recognize the team and have fun events planned for the football players.

Since La Crescent was planning on playing a junior varsity team in the first place, there won't be any playoff implications for the Wingers.

The next varsity football game is 7 p.m. Friday against Cannon Falls at the Red Wing High School stadium.
